Origin of Mother's Day

Closer to home, in the United States, Julia Ward Howe, is a writer and activist for women's rights who lived in the 1800s. She was a member and founder of several associations which aimed to defend the rights of women. In 1872 she published Appeal to Womanhood Throughout the World. This text would later be known as the Mother's Day Proclamation. This publication calls on women around the world to unite for peace. It's not quite Mother's Day as we know it today.
A few years later, in 1872, Ann Reeves Jarvis tried to establish a Mothers Friendship Day, a “friendship day for mothers”. She had already worked for several years to have the work of mothers recognized in society and with their children. This day was to be an opportunity to pay tribute to all these women.
It is his daughter, Anna Jarvis, who will succeed in making her mother's dream come true. From 1905, the year of the death of Ann Reeves Jarvis, her daughter multiplied the requests for the creation of an official day to celebrate mothers. Her mother having died on May 8, she suggests that this feast be held on the second Sunday of May. It was President Wilson who formalized the celebration in 1914.
Since then, the festival has grown and is celebrated all over the world. However, the date of Mother's Day is not the same on all continents. For example, in most European countries, mothers are celebrated on the last Sunday in May.
